What is Electrical Testing?

Electrical testing is a service provided by all certified electricians. Testing involves checking residential, commercial and industrial electrical systems for faults as well as devising a means of fixing these faults. Typical testing includes checking the following:

  • Fuses and replacing those that have blown
  • Circuit breakers
  • RCD units
  • Switches, contactors and resistors
  • Socket outlets
  • Light switches
  • Fused spurs
  • Electric ovens and other kitchen appliances
  • Electric showers and bathroom installations
  • Extractor fans in both kitchen and bathroom
  • Immersion elements and thermostats on radiators
  • Convection heaters
  • Lightning protection

Some tests may also include network cables and IT related electrics. If you suspect you may have a fault in any of the above electrical systems, don't hesitate to call in the professionals.

What is the NICEIC?

The National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting has been in operation for more than 50 years. This NICEIC is the industry standard by which all electricians and electrical systems are measured. Electrical testing is done to conform to the safety standard as set by the NICEIC. Only electricians registered with this council should be considered competent and sufficiently trained to conduct tests, repairs and new installations. All electrical testers must be registered with the NICEIC before completing a survey.

Why Bother with Electrical Testing?

Living with faulty wiring can be extremely dangerous, putting you and your loved ones at risk of a house fire. Electrical safety certificates aren't only optional for peace of mind but may be required by law in some circumstances. Insurance companies, building companies and health and safety legislation all require landlords to carry out electrical testing regularly. All tenants can ask for this certificate prior to signing a lease. The landlord is obligated by law to provide a recent safety certificate.

The Cost of a Safety Certificate

The cost of paying a certified electrician to assess your electrical system is minimal compared to the costs associated with recovering from a house fire. The cost of electrical testing depends on the size of the house in question, the number of installations requiring inspection and the type of certificate ordered. There are usually one year and five year certificates available. The cost of a typical safety certificate is around £80 plus the cost of the call out fee, which should be around £60.

Don't DIY

Any DIY attempt at electrical testing is strongly not recommended. Improper handling of wires could result in grievous injury and even death. Only certified electricians are able to issue safety certificates so testing the electrics by yourself is pointless and dangerous. Why risk compromising your electrical system when the professionals are standing by?
